Koen Vanmechelen explores pre-domestication at the Guangzhou Triennial
Starting from the 22nd of september, the Guangdong Museum of Art (China) will be the setting for the 4th triennial of Guangzhou entitled 'Meta-questions — Back to the Museum Per Se'. Artist Koen Vanmechelen is one of a handful of non-Chinese artists that is invited to present his site-specific installation 'Modified Spaces' which is the artist interpretation of the triennial's theme; the exploration of the boundaries between tradition and the contemporary.
The artist occupies three rooms at the museum which he transforms in an incubation space, a conservation area and an archaeological biotope. The visitor is invited to discover these different areas and, provided with a necessary safety package (mouth mask, disinfectant footbath and video instructions), he will be catapulted back into the past, to a period prior to the domestication of the Red Jungle Fowl, to a world in which man and chicken had not yet evolved together.

'Genetic Freedom' - Gfzk, Leipzig
On Friday, the 9th of September, a new group expo 'Scenarios about Europe' will open in the museum of Contemporary art in Leipzig. Among the artists is Koen Vanmechelen who'll present his installation 'Genetic Freedom'.
Our genes are not ‘our’ genes. They don’t belong to us and they don’t rule us. In the installation ‘Genetic Freedom’, Koen Vanmechelen returns to the initial fascination that started his famous Cosmopolitan chicken Project more than, ten years ago. From the very outset of his career, he was looking for the genetics, having the feeling that something valuable was growing ‘within’.
