Renowned experts and artists converge in Antwerp and Brussels from 29 September until 1 October 2016 for sculpture network’s 14th edition of its International Forum to discuss the relationship between art and nature. Sculpture network International Forum is an annual meeting place for artists, international specialized public and collectors from the European sculpture community. The theme this year is “Sculpting Nature: LandArt, EcoArt, BioArt“. Talks, artworks and visits will look into historical developments and the current status quo of the relationship between art and nature. Four major Belgian institutions are hosting the three-day event: Middelheim Museum, Verbeke Foundation, Vanhaerents Art Collection and the Boghossian Foundation - Villa Empain. Since the sixties, artists have begun to work with natural materials, in LandArt, EcoArt and more recently BioArt, giving expression to our changed relationship with nature, instead of representing nature, they use the substance of nature itself, such as earth, plants, trees, more recently also incorporating living organisms and genetic material. Talks will be given by pioneers such as Nils-Udo (DE), who has been working with nature since the seventies, and Alan Sonfist (USA), who already envisioned the first urban forest as early as 1965, together with the renowned artist Koen Vanmechelen (BE), a forerunner in working with living animals. Experts on the topic such as Clive Adams (UK), founder and Director of the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World, and Sue Spaid (USA), curator and art writer, will put ‘green art’ in perspective, followed by visits to key sites and private collections to appreciate art works.
