Koen Vanmechelen’s installation INCUBATED WORLDS is based on his collaboration with International Livestock Research Institute, the Ethiopian Institute for Agricultural Research and the MOUTH Foundation. Incubated Worlds seeks to harness diversity for public good through the promotion of new types of unity and harmony. Both a work of art and a scientific research project, the installation presents a story of poultry evolution, illustrating how chicken diversity can improve the livelihoods and nutritional outcomes of women and men smallholder farmers. The installation offers a new paradigm between art, poultry science and community engagement, integrating both live and visual works of art into the heart of scientific research to create a symbiotic relationship.
In the Book of Genome, DNA information of his Planetary Community Chicken is presented. A crossing between one of his Cosmopolitan Chicken and a local, commercial chicken from Ethiopia. In the accompanying videos, entitled ‘DECODE’, people read a segment of these books. A mantra for an ongoing process.
