In this Human Rights House, situated on an ancient headland between the lagoon and the sea, one can feel the origin of life that once rose here out of the water. The house rests in an area of transition from salt to sweet water, a temple of transformation, and evolving thinking. The result of this process was the birth of the concept of communities, and of civilization. As such, Tulum represents purity and a chance for diversity. Here, nature offers a chance to question one’s growth. It is a locus of opportunity and danger, where temptation conflicts with finding balance. The Human Rights House reminds us to continuously redefine the definition of communities. Koen Vanmechelen, 2019
