On Sunday, June 7, LABIOMISTA in Genk hosts the ninth edition of the Day of the Cosmogolem — a vibrant family day dedicated to connection, imagination and the power of children and young people. This year’s theme, Never Alone, explores what it means to grow, dream and belong together.

At the heart of the event stands the Cosmogolem, the giant wooden figure created by Koen Vanmechelen in which children from around the world leave messages, wishes and dreams. Installed in more than 47 locations across four continents, the Cosmogolem has become an international symbol of hope and children’s rights.

A special highlight of the day is the interactive performance Never Alone, bringing together Koen Vanmechelen and acclaimed slam poet Lisette Ma Neza. Together with musicians and dancers, they guide young and old on a poetic journey through LABIOMISTA filled with spoken word, music and movement. Along the way, visitors encounter Breaking the Cage, a sculptural trail by Vanmechelen exploring liberation, growth and the need to break through mental and social barriers together.

Throughout the afternoon, children and families can join free workshops and discovery activities across the park. From building 'a friend in wood' and creating symbolic artworks to tasting, listening, exploring nature and moving together — every activity invites participants to experience connection in a hands-on and playful way.

“For years, the Cosmogolem has tried to help children break free from the cage of silence and loneliness,” says Koen Vanmechelen. “Nobody grows alone. We need one another in order to become free.”

The Day of the Cosmogolem also connects to Vanmechelen’s recently opened Venice Biennale exhibition We Thought We Were Alone, where themes of coexistence, vulnerability and interdependence take center stage.

The proceeds of the event support both local and international projects, including a special trip to Sweden for LABIOMISTA’s conservators and the restoration of a Cosmogolem in Zimbabwe.
