On Friday 22nd December, LABIOMISTA and some 50 cultural houses in Belgium and The Netherlands colour white by the special white flag of art collective Schscht. Together these flags form an iconic, cross-border art installation but, above all, they form a strong image of hope.
More than 100 white flags created by the Belgian-Dutch art collective Schscht (Koosje Schmeddes and Dirk Schellekens) fly on the roofs of the cultural world in Belgium and the Netherlands since Friday 22 December 2023.
With the conceptual artwork White Flag With Watermark, Schscht is sending out a hopeful message of peace. For this the duo receives the support of some fifty art institutions -including LABIOMISTA- in Belgium and the Netherlands.
The white flag as a sign of peace is covered with a light gray watermark. This flag does not choose a camp but does indicate where the pain point lies, namely that peace is not freely available. Just as watermarked stock images are not freely available, the watermark here is a metaphor for the toll of peace.
