Ubuntu, De Mijlpaal, Dreaming - Thinking - Doing, Heusden-Zolder (BE), 28.5 - 27.8 '23 (extended)

On the occasion of their 30th anniversary, art gallery De Mijlpaal is organising the unique participatory project 'Dreaming-Thinking-Doing'. Visitors to De Mijlpaal will link their own Mijlpaal story to a work by one of the 30 artists who participated in various exhibitions and projects in recent years, including Koen Vanmechelen. A peculiar and sometimes emotional expo, always personal and unique.

Ubuntu: I am because we are

Art gallery De Mijlpaal opened its doors in May 1993 under a bright spring sun. Over the past 30 years, et dynamic arts centre has gone through a special journey in its home base in Heusden-Zolder, Knokke-Zoute and at various Extra-Muros locations.

On the occasion of this jubilee year, a unique participatory project 'Dreaming-Thinking-Doing' was created in which visitors are asked to link their own 'Milestone story' to a work by one of the 30 artists who participated in the various exhibitions and projects of Kunstgalerij De Mijlpaal in recent years. The result is sometimes emotional, sometimes quirky, sometimes totally unexpected - but always very personal and unique.

Curator Lut Maris selected Koen Vanmechelens' 'Ubuntu'; two small African figures with masks, and a virus in glass. Ubuntu literally means "I am because we are" in the Bantu language. It is a powerful invitation to embrace the principle of this South African philosophy and become intimately involved in the profound bond of exchange that unites all humanity and natural creation. For both biologically and socially, we are no one without others.

The transparency of the material is a metaphor for the artist stripping himself of his own soul and generously offering himself to the Other.
